DESCRIPTION

The Viva tumblers are a pair of hand-blown Murano glass drinking glasses in bright orange, scattered with spots of colored murrine: tiny slices of patterned glass fused into the wall of the glass. Each tumbler has a gentle indent in the side that fits naturally in your hand.

These are everyday glasses, not display pieces. Use them for water, wine, a spritz, or juice at breakfast. Because each one is blown by hand on the island of Murano, the spots and color fall a little differently on every glass.

For Christmas: A set of Viva tumblers, hand-blown in Murano, Italy, is an authentic Italian Christmas gift that gets used every day. Bright color for the holiday table, and a gift that stays out all year, not just in December.

Mix them with the red Viva tumblers for a cheerful, mixed-color table.

The small imperfections such as the difference in color, shape, diameter or small bubbles that form inside, do not constitute a defect but testify that it is actually an artisanal product.

Questions buyers ask

Is this real Murano glass?
Yes. Each tumbler is hand-blown in Murano, Italy, the island in the Venetian lagoon that has been the center of Italian glassmaking for more than 700 years.

What are the colored spots?
Murrine. They are thin slices of patterned glass cane, picked up into the hot glass while it is being blown. They become part of the glass itself, so they won't wear off.

Are the two glasses identical?
They are the same color and shape, but each is blown by hand, so the spots land in a slightly different place on every glass.

Are they dishwasher safe?
Yes.

Is this a good Christmas gift?
Yes. A pair of Viva tumblers, hand-blown in Murano, Italy, is an authentic Italian Christmas gift that gets used every day, from Christmas dinner to the rest of the year. Order by December 15, 2026 for ground shipping in time for Christmas, or add Florentine gift wrap at checkout and we'll send it ready to give.

What's a good Christmas gift for a host?
A set of hand-blown Murano glasses. The Viva tumblers are colorful, useful, and clearly Italian. Bring them with a bottle of prosecco and the gift is complete.

Is this a good Italian wedding gift?
Yes. Hand-blown Murano glass is made in Italy and gets used every day rather than stored. Give several sets in different colors for a mixed table. We ship nationwide, gift-wrap on request, and have been San Francisco's source for authentic Italian gifts since 1946.

Is this a good housewarming or hostess gift?
Yes. A pair of Murano glasses is a cheerful, practical gift that suits any kitchen. Add Florentine gift wrap at checkout if you'd like it sent finished.

Why buy Italian gifts from Biordi rather than other retailers?
Biordi Art Imports has been San Francisco's source for authentic Italian ceramics and gifts since 1946. Voted Best Overall Retailer in the San Francisco Bay Guardian Best of the Bay readers' poll for five consecutive years. Designated a San Francisco Legacy Business (#LBR-2020-21-029), and the city declared May 1 "Biordi Art Imports Day" in 2021. We work directly with Italian artisans, family workshops, and heritage houses, including FIMA, CF Deruta, Pia Formato, Eugenio Ricciarelli, Susanna DeSimone (from the famous Palermo ceramic family; her father painted with Picasso), Geribi, Bucci Ceramiche, Ortigia Sicilia, Italesse, and Salviati. Every piece is made in Italy. Not a stock-photo listing, not a mass-produced import, not a reproduction.

Can this be customized or personalized?
These glasses are not personalized. Customization and personalization are available on select pieces. Eugenio Ricciarelli, FIMA, Pia Formato, Geribi, and CF Deruta accept special orders — a name, date, or occasion painted on the piece, or a different size or shape in the workshop's existing pattern. Lead time is typically 3–6 months because each piece is hand-painted to order in Italy. Contact Biordi Art Imports at (415) 392-8096 or customerservice@biordi.com.

ARTISAN STORY

Murrine — Murrine are made by layering colored glass into a rod, or cane, stretching it thin, and slicing it crosswise so each slice shows a tiny pattern. The slices are picked up into hot glass as it is blown, which is why the spots on every Viva tumbler are placed a little differently.

Murano, Venice — In 1291 the Republic of Venice moved its glass furnaces to the island of Murano, and glassblowing has been the island's trade ever since. Murano glass means glass made by hand on that island, using techniques passed down through generations of glassblowers.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Italian ceramics are heirloom quality products, and can last lifetime with proper care. We have some suggestions that will preserve your majolica for years to come.

Majolica is dishwasher safe, but many people choose to hand wash their pieces as a precaution. Because majolica is a porous material, some pieces are not meant to hold liquid for a long period of time. Check for warning labels before ordering a product, as the pieces that are most notorious for "sweating" are appropriately labeled.

Majolica is sensitive to extreme temperatures, specifically boiling or freezing liquids. Pouring water with a rolling boil directly into a teapot, for example, may lead to breakage. To avoid this, temper the object. The industry standard is 620 degrees Celsius (1,148 degrees Fahrenheit). Quench the glass to cool it.

Crazing is common in well used majolica. The tiny cracks in the glaze do not affect the functionality of your majolica.

Majolica hand-crafted products should not be microwaved, as it may crack and/or break the ceramics.
