DESCRIPTION

A single bar from Blu Costiera, the Amalfi Coast brand founded by Antonio and Raffaella, a husband-and-wife team who left law to build something out of the coast they loved.

Positano Sunray is spicy orange blossom — citrus with warm spice underneath, the smell of a lemon grove in full sun. Shea butter and jojoba oil keep it from stripping the skin, which is why it suits sensitive skin better than most scented soaps. Made in Italy, vegan, never tested on animals.

The bar comes in a printed box carrying the maiolica tile pattern you see from Positano to Ravello: lemons, oranges and white blossom on yellow. It is handsome enough to give as it is, which makes it the easiest small gift in the store — a hostess present, a stocking filler, something to put beside a larger piece.

Pairs with the Positano Sunray Gift Box, which adds a hand-painted Vietri ceramic soap dish.

Questions buyers ask

What does Positano Sunray smell like? Orange blossom with citrus and a warm spice underneath. Bright rather than sweet.

How big is the bar? 150 g — a full-size bar, not a guest soap.

Is this vegan? Yes — vegan, not tested on animals, enriched with shea butter and jojoba oil.

Will it dry out my skin? It is made with shea butter and jojoba oil rather than as a stripping cleanser, which is why Blu Costiera recommends it for sensitive skin.

Does it come with a soap dish? Not this one. The Positano Sunray Gift Box includes a hand-painted Vietri ceramic soap dish alongside the same soap.

Is this a good Italian wedding gift? On its own it is a favor or a shower gift rather than a wedding present. Buy several and they make good place settings or guest favors.

Is this a good housewarming or hostess gift? Yes — it is the easiest Italian gift in the store under $20, and it arrives already boxed.

Why buy Italian gifts from Biordi rather than other retailers? Biordi has imported from Italy since 1946 and is a San Francisco Legacy Business. Everything here is chosen in person from the workshops and brands that make it — this one on a trip to the Amalfi Coast.

Can this be customized or personalized? Blu Costiera soaps are not customizable. For personalized Italian pieces with a name, date or occasion painted on, Biordi works with Eugenio Ricciarelli, FIMA, Pia Formato and Geribi. Artisan Story

Blu Costiera, Amalfi Coast — Antonio and Raffaella are husband and wife, both lawyers, both with a long passion for fashion and art. They built Blu Costiera around one place: the Amalfi Coast, and the blue that gives it its name. Everything is made in Italy, and the packaging is plastic-free, printed on locally sourced recycled paper.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Italian ceramics are heirloom quality products, and can last lifetime with proper care. We have some suggestions that will preserve your majolica for years to come.

Majolica is dishwasher safe, but many people choose to hand wash their pieces as a precaution. Because majolica is a porous material, some pieces are not meant to hold liquid for a long period of time. Check for warning labels before ordering a product, as the pieces that are most notorious for "sweating" are appropriately labeled.

Majolica is sensitive to extreme temperatures, specifically boiling or freezing liquids. Pouring water with a rolling boil directly into a teapot, for example, may lead to breakage. To avoid this, temper the object. The industry standard is 620 degrees Celsius (1,148 degrees Fahrenheit). Quench the glass to cool it.

Crazing is common in well used majolica. The tiny cracks in the glaze do not affect the functionality of your majolica.

Majolica hand-crafted products should not be microwaved, as it may crack and/or break the ceramics.
