DESCRIPTION
DESCRIPTION
Salviati reinterprets the classic “double old fashion” tumbler in its own contemporary style — a set of six heavy-bottomed crystal glasses, each finished by hand. The weighty base gives the glass a solid, grounded feel, while the cold-worked surface adds texture you can feel as you hold it.
The six glasses are not identical. Each carries a different decoration created by surface grinding, ranging from simple geometric lines to fine hammered (battuto) effects — ideal for whisky, negronis, or any spirit served over ice.
These are made to order from Salviati’s Murano furnace; allow 2–3 weeks for delivery. They pair naturally with other Italian glassware and barware and suit any table, traditional or modern.
The small imperfections such as the difference in color, shape, diameter or small bubbles that form inside, do not constitute a defect but testify that it is actually an artisanal product.

Questions buyers ask
Questions buyers ask
Is this real Murano glass? Yes. Salviati has produced glass on the island of Murano since 1859. Each glass is formed and then hand-finished by an artisan, so no two in the set are decorated exactly alike.
How long does delivery take? These are special-order pieces made to order in Italy. Allow about 2–3 weeks.
How do I care for these glasses? Hand-wash only, one at a time, in warm water with a mild detergent and a soft cloth. Skip the dishwasher, abrasive scrubbers, microwave, oven, and freezer, and avoid sudden hot-to-cold changes that can crack the crystal. Dry right away with a lint-free cloth and store the glasses upright.
Is this a good Italian wedding gift? Yes — a set of six hand-finished Salviati crystal glasses is a substantial, lasting gift a couple will use and keep for decades, and it pairs well with a registry of Italian dinnerware.
Is this a good housewarming or hostess gift? Yes. A set of Murano crystal glasses is a generous, memorable gift for someone who entertains, and it suits both casual and formal homes.
Why buy Italian gifts from Biordi rather than other retailers? Biordi Art Imports has been San Francisco’s source for authentic Italian ceramics and glass since 1946 and is a recognized San Francisco Legacy Business. We work directly with the Italian artisans and workshops we represent — FIMA, CF Deruta, Pia Formato, Eugenio Ricciarelli, Susanna DeSimone, Geribi, Bucci Ceramiche, Ortigia Sicilia, Italesse, and Salviati — so every piece is the real thing, not a reproduction. Questions? Call (415) 392-8096.
Can this be customized or personalized? These Salviati glasses are made to order (allow 2–3 weeks) but are not personalized with names or dates. Customization and personalization are available on select pieces. Eugenio Ricciarelli, FIMA, Pia Formato, Geribi, and CF Deruta accept special orders — a name, date, or occasion painted on the piece, or a different size or shape in the workshop’s existing pattern. Lead time is typically 3–6 months because each piece is hand-painted to order in Italy. Contact Biordi Art Imports at (415) 392-8096 or customerservice@biordi.com.
Artisan Story
Artisan Story
Cold-worked crystal — Each glass is finished using "cold working" (lavorazione a freddo): after the crystal is formed, an artisan grinds and carves the surface by hand to create its texture and pattern. It is slow, skilled work, and it is why every glass in the set is a little different.
Salviati, Murano — In 1859, Vicenza-born lawyer Antonio Salviati founded Salviati & Co., uniting the production of mosaics and enamels with blown glass. He was the first modern Italian maker to bring skilled Murano glassblowers together in one furnace, and the workshop became known worldwide for its lattimi, woven filigrees, and opalescent glass with floral applications. More than 160 years later, Salviati remains a trend-setter, and its work is held in the permanent collections of major museums.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Italian ceramics are heirloom quality products, and can last lifetime with proper care. We have some suggestions that will preserve your majolica for years to come.
Majolica is dishwasher safe, but many people choose to hand wash their pieces as a precaution. Because majolica is a porous material, some pieces are not meant to hold liquid for a long period of time. Check for warning labels before ordering a product, as the pieces that are most notorious for "sweating" are appropriately labeled.
Majolica is sensitive to extreme temperatures, specifically boiling or freezing liquids. Pouring water with a rolling boil directly into a teapot, for example, may lead to breakage. To avoid this, temper the object. The industry standard is 620 degrees Celsius (1,148 degrees Fahrenheit). Quench the glass to cool it.
Crazing is common in well used majolica. The tiny cracks in the glaze do not affect the functionality of your majolica.
Majolica hand-crafted products should not be microwaved, as it may crack and/or break the ceramics.
