Italian Infused Extra Virgin Olive Oil in Tin - 100ml: Basil

Extra virgin olive oil with natural basil flavor from Tenuta Sant'Ilario, a farm at Costa del Mulino in Pineto, on the Abruzzo coast. It comes in a 100ml decorated tin that keeps out light, which is what breaks down olive oil fastest.

Pineto sits in the province of Teramo — the same province as Castelli, the majolica town Emilio Biordi came from when he opened Biordi Art Imports in 1946. The oil comes from the same farm as the dried basil and Mediterranean blend we carry.

This is a finishing oil, not a cooking oil. Drizzle it over bruschetta, pizza, or a caprese salad. Brush it on grilled fish or vegetables after they come off the heat. Put it out in a dish with bread. High heat flattens the basil, so add it at the end.

How do I use basil olive oil?
As a finishing oil. Drizzle it over bruschetta, pizza, tomatoes and mozzarella, grilled fish, or vegetables, or pour it into a dish for dipping bread. Add it after cooking rather than frying with it — heat dulls the basil.

Why is it in a tin instead of a bottle?
Light is one of the main things that makes olive oil go stale. A tin blocks it completely, so the oil keeps its flavor longer than it would in clear glass.

How should I store it?
In a cool, dark cupboard, away from the stove, with the cap closed tightly. Olive oil is best used within a few months of opening.

Is this a good Italian wedding gift?
Not on its own — it gets used up. It is a good addition to a larger gift: pair it with a Deruta olive oil dish or a serving platter. For a wedding gift built to last, look to hand-painted Deruta dinnerware or Salviati Murano glass.

Tenuta Sant'Ilario — Pineto, Abruzzo — A working farm at Costa del Mulino in Pineto, on the Adriatic coast in the province of Teramo. Its oils, herbs, and spices are packed there under the Tenuta Sant'Ilario name. Pineto is in the same province as Castelli, the hill town Emilio Biordi left for San Francisco in the 1940s, which makes these tins one of the few things in the store that come from the founder's own corner of Italy.
