A hand-painted lava stone tabletop in the Domiziani COD 151 PP3 design. Cut from volcanic stone, hand-painted, and kiln-fired at 1000°C in Torgiano, Umbria, by the Domiziani workshop.

Lava stone is the only hand-painted Italian surface that lives outdoors. The firing fuses the glaze into the stone rather than sitting on top of it, so the color does not fade in sun or lift in rain — the reason these tables are used on terraces and in restaurant courtyards as readily as in dining rooms.

Each top is painted by hand and no two are identical. This design runs the full size range, including the 87" two-piece and 94" four-panel tops for a long dining table. The base is separate — Biordi can advise on pairing, or the top can be fitted to a base you already own.

The small imperfections such as the difference in color, shape, diameter or small bubbles that form inside, do not constitute a defect but testify that it is actually an artisanal product.

Can this really stay outside?
Yes. The design is fired into the lava stone at 1000°C, so the surface is vitrified rather than coated. It is made for terraces and garden dining as well as interiors.

How large can it go?
Up to 94" x 43" as a four-panel top, or 87" x 44" in two pieces. Large tops ship in panels because a single slab that size cannot be moved intact.

Does it come with a base?
No — the tabletop is sold on its own. Call Biordi at (415) 392-8096 and we will help you source or match a base.

How long does it take?
Each top is cut, painted and fired to order in Italy. Contact Biordi for the current lead time and shipping arrangements before you order.

Is this a good Italian wedding gift?
It is a centerpiece purchase rather than a gift — the kind of thing a family buys together, or a couple registers for as a single large item.

Is this a good housewarming or hostess gift?

Can this be customized or personalized?
Lava stone tops are made to order in the sizes and designs the workshop produces. Customization and personalization are available on select pieces. Eugenio Ricciarelli, FIMA, Pia Formato, Geribi, and CF Deruta accept special orders — a name, date, or occasion painted on the piece, or a different size or shape in the workshop's existing pattern. Lava stone — Volcanic stone is cut into slabs, hand-painted, and fired at 1000°C. The heat fuses glaze and stone into one surface, which is why a lava stone table survives weather that would ruin painted ceramic or wood.

Domiziani, Torgiano and Deruta (Umbria) — Roberto Domiziani established the business in Deruta in 1987. Starting from traditional Deruta designs, the workshop has become one of the most modern and innovative producers of Italian majolica in Perugia, merging nature and art. Domiziani is best known for its hand-crafted lava stone tables.

Italian ceramics are heirloom quality products, and can last lifetime with proper care. We have some suggestions that will preserve your majolica for years to come.

Majolica is dishwasher safe, but many people choose to hand wash their pieces as a precaution. Because majolica is a porous material, some pieces are not meant to hold liquid for a long period of time. Check for warning labels before ordering a product, as the pieces that are most notorious for "sweating" are appropriately labeled.

Majolica is sensitive to extreme temperatures, specifically boiling or freezing liquids. Pouring water with a rolling boil directly into a teapot, for example, may lead to breakage. To avoid this, temper the object. The industry standard is 620 degrees Celsius (1,148 degrees Fahrenheit). Quench the glass to cool it.

Crazing is common in well used majolica. The tiny cracks in the glaze do not affect the functionality of your majolica.

Majolica hand-crafted products should not be microwaved, as it may crack and/or break the ceramics.
