Materials and Firing
The incredible characteristics of volcanic stone and lava rock make them perfect materials for projects with high customization capacity: beautiful even in its natural form, the stone is coated with different glazes and hand-painted decorations for unique pieces of every color, size and shape. With its extraordinary resistance, the table tops can live both indoors and outdoors.
Volcanic stone (mined underground) is used for the Classic tops (SUN), while Lava Rock (above ground) is used for the Design tops (COD). Lava rock is denser and harder than volcanic stone and it also bakes dark charcoal and does not require a white glaze base coat prior to adding the ceramic glaze. This allows the artist much greater flexibility and freedom as the organic color of the rock does not influence the designs.
The term Majolica lava stone commonly indicates a lava basalt object that has a majolica surface decoration. In reality, since ceramics rather means a large grouping of terracotta artifacts, this decorative technique in the specialist field is more correctly referred to as Majolica lava stone or Majolica on lava stone.
Thanks to the particular aesthetic potential due to ceramics, combined with the remarkable mechanical and physical resistance of basalt, ceramic-coated lava stone is used for the production of tables, tops for kitchens and bathrooms, floors, mosaics, shower trays, sinks and coverings.
The process of working stone and volcanic lava is divided into several phases, all carried out by hand in the Domiziani studio: cutting, glazing, hand decoration, vitrification and double firing at over 1000 degrees.
This creates a piece with high element tolerance, so Domiziani tables can be enjoyed both indoors and out. An excellent stain and impact resistance, along with a non-porous surface, combine to create heirloom-quality pieces made to stand the test of time.
Artisan Story
Artisan Story
Roberto Domiziani established the business in 1987. Starting in traditional Deruta Ceramiche designs, the company has evolved into offering one of the truly most modern and innovative Italian majolica designs coming out of Perugia. By merging nature and art they produce products into unique works of art. For more than 30 years Domiziani has revolutionized the way of thinking about stone. Their artisan techniques are the result of careful research and deep knowledge of the subject: they involve the meticulous artistic work of those who know how to see beyond, transforming the unexpected into a formula of uniqueness. The eclectic and resistant combinations in lava and volcanic stone are the effect of processes that change the shape of the material through the idea, fixed and tempered in an oven that forges its identity.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Italian ceramics are heirloom quality products, and can last lifetime with proper care. We have some suggestions that will preserve your majolica for years to come.
Majolica is dishwasher safe, but many people choose to hand wash their pieces as a precaution. Because majolica is a porous material, some pieces are not meant to hold liquid for a long period of time. Check for warning labels before ordering a product, as the pieces that are most notorious for "sweating" are appropriately labeled.
Majolica is sensitive to extreme temperatures, specifically boiling or freezing liquids. Pouring water with a rolling boil directly into a teapot, for example, may lead to breakage. To avoid this, temper the object. The industry standard is 620 degrees Celsius (1,148 degrees Fahrenheit). Quench the glass to cool it.
Crazing is common in well used majolica. The tiny cracks in the glaze do not affect the functionality of your majolica.
Majolica hand-crafted products should not be microwaved, as it may crack and/or break the ceramics.
