Blue Crest Biscotti Jar

The Blue Crest Biscotti Jar is a blue-and-white cookie jar, handmade and hand-painted in Montelupo, Tuscany, and filled to capacity with an assortment of DiCamillo Bakery's individually wrapped Italian cookies, including their Chocolate Drizzled Almond Biscotti Grande. The famous Montelupo leaf fills the front in swirling indigo vines, set off by an intricate Renaissance-framed crest.

The DiCamillo family commissioned this jar directly from Montelupo, exclusively for their collection, and imports it themselves. Few colors are as universally pleasing on ceramics as indigo blue, so it fits almost any kitchen. It's the most classic of the DiCamillo jars and sits well beside blue-and-white Italian pieces.

The small imperfections such as the difference in color, shape, diameter or small bubbles that form inside, do not constitute a defect but testify that it is actually an artisanal product.

Why pair biscotti with a ceramic jar?
Both are baked twice. Biscotti are baked, sliced, and baked again for their crunch. Majolica is fired once to harden the clay, then glazed, painted, and fired a second time. The pairing is a small tribute to both crafts.

What do I do with the jar when the cookies are gone?
Keep it. It's a working cookie jar — refill it with wrapped biscotti or cookies, or display it as a piece of hand-painted Tuscan majolica. Hand-wash only.

Montelupo, Tuscany — Montelupo Fiorentino, in the heart of Tuscany, is a historic ceramic center where the genius of Italian majolica lives on. It is home to Il Museo della Ceramica di Montelupo, famous for its Renaissance collection of restored ceramic pieces. The DiCamillo family commissions these jars directly from Montelupo and imports them themselves; each design is exclusive to the DiCamillo collection.

DiCamillo Bakery, Niagara Falls, New York — Tomaso and Addolorata DiCamillo grew up in Italy's Abruzzo region and opened DiCamillo Bakery in Niagara Falls in 1920. They baked bread in basement ovens and delivered it to neighbors by horse-drawn wagon. Four generations of the family have run the bakery since. In 1979 their biscotti were picked up by fine department stores, and DiCamillo became a national name. In 2022 the bakery was inducted into the New York State Historic Business Preservation Registry. Biordi's own founder, Emilio Biordi, came from Castelli — also in Abruzzo — which makes this a natural partnership between two Abruzzo-rooted family businesses.

Italian ceramics are heirloom quality products, and can last lifetime with proper care. We have some suggestions that will preserve your majolica for years to come.

Majolica is dishwasher safe, but many people choose to hand wash their pieces as a precaution. Because majolica is a porous material, some pieces are not meant to hold liquid for a long period of time. Check for warning labels before ordering a product, as the pieces that are most notorious for "sweating" are appropriately labeled.

Majolica is sensitive to extreme temperatures, specifically boiling or freezing liquids. Pouring water with a rolling boil directly into a teapot, for example, may lead to breakage. To avoid this, temper the object. The industry standard is 620 degrees Celsius (1,148 degrees Fahrenheit). Quench the glass to cool it.

Crazing is common in well used majolica. The tiny cracks in the glaze do not affect the functionality of your majolica.

Majolica hand-crafted products should not be microwaved, as it may crack and/or break the ceramics.
